Day 2: August 23

Today I brushed up on my photography skills, as I have not used my camera very much recently. I use a Nikon DSLR, but lately I have just been using my phone because it is faster and more accessible in my daily life. I refreshed my knowledge about camera settings, such as differences between levels of aperture and shutter speeds.

Additionally, I reviewed some of the science behind photography, which I learned in a class I took my sophomore year: Photography and Physics. Essentially, photography is light, and light is physics, so photography uses physics. The aperture of a camera determines how much light hits a camera’s sensor. The larger the aperture, the more light hits the sensor. Additionally, a larger aperture creates more bokeh in the background of a photo. Shutter speed also affects the amount of light that hits a camera sensor. So in photography situations where the environment has more light, the photographer would use a faster shutter speed. On the other hand if a photographer is shooting at night or in a dark room, they would use a slower shutter speed so the photo would be brighter.

After brushing up on the photography basics that I have learned through photography classes in the past, I decided to take some pictures of my friends so that I can compare my photos at the beginning and at the end of my independent study.

For both of these pictures I used flash, my shutter speed was 1/200, my aperture was 5.6, and my ISO was 5000.

For these two photos my flash was on, my shutter speed was 1/200, my aperture was 7, and my ISO was 4500.

Finally, for these two photos my flash was on, my shutter speed was 1/500, my aperture was 5.6, and my ISO 4500.
